Impulsive Buying
I’m an impulsive buyer! Ooops!
After my work today, I dropped by Powerbooks to buy a birthday card for a dear friend. As I entered the bookstore, my eyes widened as I gazed upon piles and piles of books. What a beautiful sight to behold! Visiting bookstores is one of the activities that gives me so much pleasure!
And so there I was, picking up one book. I scanned a few pages and I liked what I read. I picked up another book. I read the back cover and I was intrigued at what the book has to offer. And another book. And another book. Before I knew it, I was holding ten (10) books! Yes, ten books! I wanted to buy all of them. But then I decided to take it easy… Maybe I was just too excited. Maybe I should buy only five (5). After all, I didn’t plan to buy a book, more so “books” tonight.
Presenting…

Yes, I’m an impulsive buyer — but only of good books, seminars, or materials that would bless me and the people around me. I’m a fan of self-help books because I believe that reading self-help books is like me, entering the minds of the authors and getting a glimpse of how they think. What an adventure that is!
So if you were to ask me whether it’s okay to buy on impulse, my answer is, “it depends on what you buy.” And I would answer the same if you were to ask me whether debt is good or bad. The truth is, there’s a “good debt” and a “bad debt”. Education (especially financial education) will help us distinguish one from the other.
I mentioned that I bought five books, right? The fifth book I bought was a book on travels. It’s a recount of Angelina Jolie’s journeys to Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Pakistan, Cambodia, and Ecuador during her stint as a Goodwill Ambassador for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). I’m not really into Hollywood stars but for some reasons, I am amazed at Angelina Jolie’s engagements outside the glam world.

And since I’ll be travelling to a place where people there speak Spanish, I also bought an instructional audio on how to speak Spanish.

It only took me 15 minutes to pick up those books and head to the cashier. I can’t wait to read these books and listen to the above audio! (I will consider sharing my notes about these books after I read them. Watch out for it!)
I put a lot of premium on learning and personal development. Why? Because I believe that one of my greatest assets is not money or material wealth but my talent and one of my greatest investments is not in stocks but in myself.
Here’s another reason why I pursue education, especially financial education. As Robert Kiyosaki puts it,
Investing is like driving a car. If you have no drivers education or driving experience, driving a car is very, very risky. Get educated.
How about you? Where do you invest your time and money?
Feel free to share your thoughts. Let’s learn from each other. =)
Happy Learning!

Whew!!!
I buy books on impulse, too, at times. There was this lunch time that I decided to just take a walk from our office to Greenbelt just to get some air, “dust and heat”. I walked into Powerbooks and stepped out with the book Till Debt Do Us Part by Chinkee Tan on my hands. I had no plans to buy one that time but I enjoyed and learned a lot from it. I highly recommend it, too.
That was last year. Recently, after buying my first running shoes at Planet Sports, I dropped by at (again) Powerbooks. Books are on sale! I bought an almost P1,500-book at only P200. Other than the bargain price, I bought the book Stop Acting Rich and Live Like a Real Millionnaire to devour the financial knowledge written on its pages.
Btw, this site is amazing. I’m excited to read through all your posts. Oh, wait! I just have to do it- one or two each morning. 🙂 Thanks for sharing. More power!
