Three Ways to Overcome Insecurity

How are you? 🙂

It’s been a while since I last posted an article in this blog. I’ve been busy with a lot of things and I’m so happy with the results so far.

I just want to share with you what I learned from Bro. Bo Sanchez’s plenary talk during the Kerygma Conference last November 22, 2013 at PICC.

I am sharing this to remind you how beautiful, special, and great you are. Jesus gave His life for you, for us. 🙂

Let me now share with you my notes regarding Bro. Bo’s talk on Overcoming Insecurity.

Disclaimer: These are my notes during Bo Sanchez’s talk. I credit everything good about this article to Bro. Bo Sanchez. All the errors, if any, are entirely mine.

First, let us analyze  7 symptoms of insecurity.

7 Symptoms of Insecurity

1. Inadequate – sense of lack

“I’m not smart enough.”

“I’m not intelligent enough.”

2. Self Conscious – you feel like everybody is looking down at you when you enter a room.

3. Envy – you compare yourself with someone else

4. Defensive – in Tagalog, “depensib” (just kidding!)

5. Self promotion – binubuhat ang sariling bangko

6. Bully – a mean person is an insecure person

7. Competitive – overly competitive   Almost everyone is insecure.

Causes of Insecurity

1. Parents’ Constant Fighting

2. Parents’ lack of love

3. Parents’ constant criticism

4. Parents are also insecure

5. Other childhood trauma – e.g. poverty, molestation, bullying, etc.   Insecurity is a thief. It steals away from you the blessings of God.

3 Ways to Overcome Insecurity

1. Accept Your ROYAL Self

Royal blood flows through your veins. You’re a child of God.   There is a buffet of blessings waiting for you.

Dream Big Dreams.

Pray bold prayers.

Do not midsize yourself. You’re a prince.

You’re a princess. You are a kid of the King!

2. Accept Your REAL Self

The most painful thing you can do to yourself is to try to be someone else.

Don’t compare yourself with someone else because you are unique.

You have the gift that only you can give and no one else can.

Not everyone will like your real self but that is okay.

There’s a famous quote that says,

“To those who don;t like you, no explanation is enough. To those who like you, no explanation is necessary.”

Spend time with people who like you.

To those who don’t like you, love them from afar.

3. Accept Your REPRESSED Self

Deep within you is an image of you that you are ashamed of.

Bo Sanchez suggested three steps on how to accept and love your repressed self.

Step 1: Imagine that insecure situation.

Step 2: Push out that insecurity to the form of a being, with face and body. In psychology, it’s called shadow.

In the case of Bro. Bo, it’s the little Bo — ugly, thin, unwanted by his classmates.

Step 3: Imagine that image looking at you and you looking at each other and smile. Jesus is beside you. Jesus says, “Use your gift for others.”
