How I Lost ₱200K to a Scam and Turned My Financial Life Around
How I Lost ₱200K to a Scam and Turned My Financial Life Around: Lessons in Financial Literacy

Have you ever trusted someone with your hard-earned money and regretted it?
Or perhaps you’ve made financial decisions that left you overwhelmed with debt?
I’ve been there, too. Let me share my story and the lessons I learned so you can avoid the same mistakes.
How I Fell Victim to a Financial Scam
In 2008, I attended a seminar where I met someone who became part of my close circle of friends. She was generous and kind, often treating us to snacks or meals. In 2009, she invited me to invest in her travel agency, promising a 10% monthly return.
The agreement was backed by notarized contracts and post-dated checks (PDCs). I trusted her completely.
Initially, I invested ₱20K, earning ₱2K in a month. Encouraged by this, I increased my investment to ₱50K, then ₱100K, and finally, ₱200K. Everything seemed perfect until one fateful afternoon.
While on a sunny island-hopping trip in Palawan, I received a call from my bank:
“Hi, Ms. Nacino. The check you deposited last Friday bounced.”
Panicked, I called my friend, but her number was unreachable. That’s when it hit me—I’d been scammed. Worse, I later discovered two other friends had lost millions.
The Painful Reality of Losing ₱200K
The betrayal cut deep. I felt devastated, foolish, and financially drained. The experience taught me that financial illiteracy is incredibly expensive.
But instead of letting it define me, I used it as a wake-up call to take control of my finances.
Turning Financial Loss into Lessons
In 2010, I joined Bo Sanchez’s TrulyRichClub, where I learned the importance of financial literacy. Through a supportive community and daily guidance, I gained the tools to rebuild my finances.
Within a year, my mindset—and my financial life—transformed.
Why Financial Education is the Best Investment
Without financial literacy, it’s easy to fall prey to scams or make poor decisions. I’ve met retirees who lost their entire savings to get-rich-quick schemes, and it’s heartbreaking.
Imagine working hard your entire life, only to see your money vanish overnight.
This is why empowering yourself with financial education is the best investment you can make.
Key Lessons to Avoid Financial Scams
Here are a few practical tips I learned the hard way:
- Verify Investments: Always check if the investment is registered with the SEC or other regulatory bodies.
- Beware of High Returns: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
- Educate Yourself: Join communities like TrulyRichClub or attend financial seminars to grow your knowledge.
- Trust but Verify: Even if it’s a friend, always double-check.
It’s Not Too Late to Turn Things Around
Have you made financial mistakes in the past? It’s not too late to change. Start small—track your expenses, educate yourself, and avoid risky investments.
I wish you success and happiness!
Cheers,
Sha
