The Power of Giving

Happy MondayHow are you?

Last weekend, my team and I went to Bacolod to conduct a whole day talk/workshop for the children of sugar cane farmers in Bacolod. This is in partnership with Sun Life Foundation and The Spark Project.

The moment we arrived in Bacolod, my Toastmaster friend Emily picked us up at the hotel and treated us to a sumptuous dinner. After which, Tita Lourdes invited us to have coffee/dessert in her home. It was a fun night that ended at past 12 midnight.

The next day, we conducted a Dream Board Workshop in the morning and a Money Management talk in the afternoon. It was so much fun seeing the children learn how to dream and dream the right way.

Here are some photos.

At the end of the talk/workshop, we distributed evaluation forms. Their words touched my heart. Words of Affirmation is my 2nd love language, so let me share some of their messages here. Hehe! 😀

“Thank you for spending time with us even though you are a busy woman.” – Josephine

“Sobra po akong nag-enjoy. Pwede po ako magtanong? Kailan po kayo babalik?” (I enjoyed a lot. If I may ask, when are you coming back?) – Abegail

“I hope you will come back to teach us again.” – Remie

“We love you Ms. Sha. I wish we will meet again.” – Jenerose

“Ms. Sha when I graduate, can I apply in your company?” – Jenny Ann

There were also comments that made me laugh.

“Ms. Sha, bakit ang ganda mo?” (Why are you so beautiful?)
 – Jonna Mae

“Ms. Sha, how to be you?” – Fredelyn

How did this talk happen? Let’s backtrack a bit.

In October 2017, I went to Bacolod to attend the Toastmasters Convention. Since I’ll be in Bacolod anyway, I told our marketing manager Clarice, who is based in Bacolod. “I’d love to give a pro bono talk to a public school in Bacolod.”

Clarice and her husband Val then organized a whole day event wherein I gave a talk on “How to Make Your Dreams Come True.” That day, I saw the potential of those public school students who were children of sugarcane farmers. I also learned the sad reality that they didn’t know how to dream.

So I told Clarice, “Let’s think of ways to help the students some more.”

In February 2018, Sun Life Foundation and The Spark Project called for project proposals for programs that promote financial literacy. We joined and we were selected. That was how we got to travel to Bacolod and do the whole day outreach talk/workshop. (Thank you, Sun Life Foundation and The Spark Project).

That’s The Power of Giving. When you give, you attract opportunities and things fall into place.

I was blessed to meet Bro. Bo Sanchez early on. He taught me a very powerful principle that has been guiding me since 2011, “Serve first, money will follow.”

Every time I do something, I ask myself, “Am I doing this because I want to serve?” If the answer is yes, I’d give my all. That strategy worked really well. I love it! 🙂 So far, so good. I am also very blessed to have an energetic, competent, and reliable team who is with me in our advocacies. I love working with them!

Why is giving powerful? TEDx speaker Jacqueline Way said that one of the ways to be happy is to give everyday. When we give, our serotonin levels (happy hormones) rise. Everyday, ask yourself, “What can I give someone today?”

Whenever you are tempted to ask, “What can I get?” Reverse the question and ask, “What can I give?” It’s the same when it comes to relationships/friendships.

Speaking of “The Power of Giving,” that’s the title of my talk for the BNI national convention happening on September 21, 2018 at Marriott Hotel. BNI is a global business referral organization.

If you are an entrepreneur and you want to meet some of the most successful entrepreneurs in the Philippines, join us! BNI’s philosophy is “Giver’s Gain.”

Shall I see you there? Have a great week ahead!

Remember to give and you will receive. 😉

I wish you success and happiness!
