What Are You Willing to Give Up?
Last Monday, our theme for our Toastmasters‘ meeting was “Giving Up“.
For a while, I wondered why our VP for Education came up with the theme on Giving Up. I smiled as I realized the theme was very timely for the Holy Week.
As Christians and as Catholics, we are encouraged to take this season to fast, to pray more, to love more, to reflect…
Bo Sanchez, the Founder and Leader of the Light of Jesus Community, wrote an eBook called 7 Days of Prayer and Fasting which you may download for free here .
His mission is: We want to grow closer to God and receive all that He wants to give to us. When you fast, you’re telling God that He is more important than food.
For his part, Bo Sanchez is giving up his meals for one week. He’s on a liquid fast, meaning, he will only take juiced fruits and vegetables, and water for one whole week.
Why do we fast? Here’s some of the blessings enumerated by Bro. Bo Sanchez in his eBook 7 Days of Prayer and Fasting:
Blessing #1: Fasting Brings You Closer to God.
Blessing #2: Fasting Unites You with the Poor.
Blessing #3: Fasting Opens You to God’s Power.
Blessing #4: Fasting Cleanses Your Body.
Blessing #5: Fasting Empowers Our Ministry
I was looking for photos for this post and I came upon photos from Mel Gibson’s movie The Passion of the Christ.
And then I remembered the emotions I felt while watching that movie in the big screen a few years ago. I couldn’t help but cry. I couldn’t bear seeing Christ being whipped, being crowned with thorns, being made to carry the Cross which he lovingly embraced, and being nailed to the Cross! It was such a painful sight…
Yet, Christ suffered all these because of His great love for us. During this Holy Week, may we reflect and remember how much God loves us and how He gave up His life in order to save us.
I would like to invite you to take this Holy Week to reflect, be still, pray more, and fast. Let’s pray for each other.
What are we willing to give up this Holy Week? What are we willing to say No to so we can say Yes to God?
Facebook? Chocolates? Snacks? Rice? Gossip? Smoking? Drinking? Too much Sleep?
God loves us! May we love Him back to the best of our ability…
Have a Blessed and Meaningful Holy Week!
Cheers,
Sha Nacino

Thanks for this article. It is a reminder for me and all Christians to celebrate the Holy Week in silence, fasting, prayer and charity. Let us glorify the Lord and look forward to the resurrection.
