An Afternoon with Miriam Quiambao

It was a quiet Wednesday afternoon when Miriam Quiambao and I met up in a coffee shop at the Fort.

I arrived 45 minutes earlier than our agreed time. As I was waiting for Miriam, a smile spread over my face. This is surreal! I am about to have a one-on-one meeting with a celebrity and former 1999 Miss Universe 1st runner-up Miriam Quiambao!

To chase away my nervousness, or should I say, excitement, I brought out Robert Kiyosaki’s book Retire Young, Retire Rich! I love the book and I’m glad I bought it when I already retired from the corporate world. The book just reaffirmed my decision to quit my job and pursue my passions.

Miriam Quiambao arrived just in time. She wore a simple outfit and she had no make-up on except for a light lipstick. We talked as if we were long time friends who haven’t seen each other for quite some time. She even showed me some photos from her phone. She’s down-to-earth, unassuming, and witty.

I interviewed her for Bo Sanchez’s Truly Rich Club newsletter. We talked about money, her businesses, her speaking engagements, bucket list, the books she’s writing, personal development, and many more!

I am still in the process of writing down the bits and pieces she shared with me. Meanwhile, let me share with you three lessons I got from my encounter with Miriam Quiambao.

One, invest in your greatest asset — yourself.

Even though Miriam Quiambao had a booming career in showbiz, she constantly invested in her education. She attended seminars. She read books. She sought mentors.

She didn’t rest on her laurels. She remained humble and teachable.

Today, she is financially free! It means that even if she decides to stop working, she still continues earning. She can still afford to sustain the lifestyle she chooses.

Two,  the beauty of second chances.

Who would forget “The Fall” (take it literally) of Miriam Quimbao during the Miss Universe competition? Graceful as she is, she gathered her composure, smiled, and stood up after she tripped from her high heels. She drew a resounding applause from the audience.

In real life, Miriam had her share of “falls” — in her investments and in her previous marriage.

There’s one thing she did. She sought God. Today, everything fell into place. Her investments, businesses, and her relationships are doing pretty well. When you see her, you see a woman who is confident, happy, and purposeful.

Speaking of second chances, it was 4:15pm when Miriam had to leave because she needed to catch a bank which would close at 4:30pm. I requested the kind barista to take one quick photo-op with Miriam.

And then something happened. I looked at my DSLR camera and lo and behold! I accidentally deleted our one and only photo! By that time, Miriam already went off!

To cut the long story short, Miriam gave me a second chance to take another photo op with her.  This time, we asked the guard to take at least five photos.

Here’s one of our photos.

Three, choose who you hangout with.

Sometimes, it’s not what we know but who we know.

There’s this study that your net worth is the average net worth of the five people you hang out with the most. What does this mean? It means that if we want to increase our net worth, we better choose who we hang out with.

This is one of the reasons why I love attending seminars. It’s my chance to meet and spend time with people who are better, wiser, and wealthier than me.

Last March 2013, I attended Bo Sanchez’s Wealth Summit. I was so happy to be surrounded by mentors. I met Edward Lee, the founder of COL Financial; Rex Mendoza, the President and CEO of Philam;  Dean Pax Lapid, one of the top entrepreneurs in the Philippines; Bro. Bo Sanchez of course; and many more! By the way, Bro. Bo Sanchez also invited me as one of the panel speakers during the event. 🙂

Every time I attend a seminar, I always look forward to meeting the speakers — either from a distance or by shaking hands with them.

My meeting that afternoon with Miriam was not our first meeting. We already bumped into each other in three different seminars — Ardy Roberto’s Project Author Class 1.0, Bo Sanchez’s Wealth Summit, and Bo Sanchez’s Speakers Bootcamp.

They say that if you spend time with a someone, you resemble him/her.

So… after hanging out with Miriam Quiambao, do I now look like a Miss Universe? 😀 Just kidding.

I wish you success and happiness!
