Tony Meloto’s Dream for the Philippines
Last November 21-24, I attended Bo Sanchez’s Kerygma Conference at PICC and SMX, respectively. Being passionate about learning, I felt pampered during all those four days of pure learning, fun, and worship.
One of the speakers that made an impact on me was Tony Meloto of Gawad Kalinga. I was only able to catch 9 minutes of his talk but these 9 minutes were so powerful I couldn’t help but jot down almost everything he said!
As many of us know, Tony Meloto is the founder of Gawad Kalinga. Through the years, Gawad Kalinga has built thousands of houses for the poor. Its vision is to end poverty for 5 million families by 2024.
This is my second time to meet Tito Tony in person. We first met on January 11, 2011. He wrote a review and a special chapter for my first book Think Rich, Yuppies! Through the help of my friend Ria Moritcho, I met Tito Tony in his GK office at Ateneo de Manila University to personally thank him.

He already made an impact on me during our first meeting. Every word he said was golden and worthy to be noted. I wish I recorded everything he said.
So when he gave a talk at Bo Sanchez’s Kerygma Conference last November 22, 2013, I made sure I had my notebook and pen ready.
Tito Tony Meloto’s Dream
Tony Meloto’s dream is to be the first Catholic country in the world to end poverty.
Let me now share with you the words of wisdom I picked from Tony Meloto’s talk.
Words of Wisdom from Tito Tony Meloto
“I value the freedom to serve God, not the power to rule people.
“Treat the poor as family. Treat the rich as family. Build a nation where no one is an enemy. Build solidarity.”
“By being detached from money, I gained the trust of the wealthiest people in the planet.”
“By being detached from power, I gained the trust of the most powerful people in the planet.”
“Because we never accepted PDAF money, we became the most trustworthy.”
“The Filipino is part of a global family.”
“Evangelization is faith in action.”
“No one is born a criminal.”
“In a country that is corrupt, integrity is everything.”
“I have not lied to my wife. If you can lie to your wife, you can also cheat on your taxes.”
“Be detached from money, power, and glory because all the glory belongs to God.”
“Poverty is man-made. It can be unmade by man. Our greatest assets are our people.”
“Don’t be a job seeker abroad. Be a wealth creator and job generator.”
Tony Meloto is a humble man as well. He prefers to be called Tito Tony rather than Sir Tony. 🙂
