Make It Happen

We were in the training room with my colleagues. I was about 26 years old then. I already forgot the topic that day but our trainer posed this question to us:
.
.
“When do you plan to retire?”
.
.
One colleague raised his hand and said, “I’ll retire when I’m in my 60’s.”
.
.
Another colleague said, “Maybe when I’m either in my 50’s or 60’s.”
.
.
Then the trainer asked me, “How about you, Sha?”
.
.
“I’ll retire before I reach 30.” I smiled and answered.
.
.
Everyone looked at me and said, “Woah!” As if they were saying, You must be kidding!
.
.
At the back of my mind, I wish I said, “I’ll retire when I’m 28 years old.”
.
.

Words are Powerful
.
.
True enough, my words became flesh. I retired from my corporate job two months before I turned 30.
.
.
Today, I’m a full-time author, speaker, and entrepreneur. I run my own start-up business and I help run another business that my friends and I built up. I’ve never felt so alive and happy! 🙂
.
.
Please note that I’m not in any way undervaluing an employee. I was an employee for 9 years and I learned so much as an employee. I’ve said this before and I want to say it again. I loved everything about my previous company —  the management, culture, integrity of the company, my colleagues, many of my bosses, the CSR activities, etc. — except for my work itself. I was doing a job I wasn’t really good and passionate at.
.
.
The major reason I quit my job was because I felt being an employee was not the best use of my time and talent. I wanted to heed my calling, that is, to communicate (H.I.M.) Happiness, Inspiration, and Meaning through my passions in writing books, giving talks, organising seminars, etc.
.
.
And so I resolved to take off my employee hat for good and pursue my real passions, my real calling.
.
.
Though I retired from my corporate job, it doesn’t mean I don’t work and I just play all day. Haha! 🙂 I realized I am devoting more hours to work now as an entrepreneur than when I was still an employee. The main difference is that I love what I do that sometimes I can no longer draw a line between work and play. Work is play and play is work.
.
.
Indeed, Confucius is right when he said,
“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”

Create Your Future
.
.
Words are powerful. I heard this before. You create your future.
.
.
What kind of future do you want to have? Are you happy with how your life is unfolding so far?
.
.
Are you excited to jump out of bed because you are excited to go to work again?
.
.
What kind of work do you like to do every day?
.
.
What business do you want to put up?
.
.
What books have you always wanted to write?
.
.
What kind of relationships are you enjoying?
.
.
My suggestion? You declare the kind of future you want to have. Write it down. Post it in your dashboard. Because words are powerful.
.
.
Declare your future and make it happen.
.
.
I wish you success and happiness!
