What Shrek Can Teach Us about Burnout

I love the movie Shrek 3.

Shrek was newly married to Fiona and they had a number of adorable ogre babies. Shrek loves his family. Every day, he serves his family. He baths his babies, he feeds them, he changes their diapers, and he cuddles them to sleep.

Though he loves his babies so much, it came to a point wherein he got so bored and burned out feeding his babies, bathing them, changing their diapers, and so on… day in and day out. Why? Because these tasks were outside his core competencies.

A few years ago, I was like Shrek. In the apartment that I shared with my friends, we used to do our own laundry. We also used to take turns in cooking breakfast/dinner and in cleaning the apartment.

I dread the days when I was the cleaner of the house or the cook for the day. It would take me one day to clean the apartment and another whole day to do the laundry. These tasks took so much of my time and energy yet, the results were mediocre. The great thing was, my housemates and I learned to outsource these tasks to someone who is more efficient and effective, our helper.

Since then, I felt so relieved not having to do my own laundry on Saturdays. It felt so good to wake up in the morning with the breakfast ready. It was comforting to go home after a tiring day at work knowing that a delicious hot meal is waiting for you. Outsourcing freed up so much of my time!

During my free days, I would concentrate in my unique core competencies. I would work on my book, write interesting topics to post in my blogs, prepare my speeches for the toastmasters meeting, read good books, attend seminars, meet with my wonderful friends,  talk to my Papa on the phone, play with my two-year old neighbor, etc.

My point? It’s important for us to say NO to certain activities that take so much of our time; yet produces mediocre results. Learn to outsource activities that are outside our core competencies.

In the Philippines, the number of BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) companies is growing. More and more corporations are outsourcing some of its services to BPOs.  Why? These companies want to concentrate on their core businesses or core competencies.

If companies do that, there must be a very valid and high value behind it.  We could learn a lot from these companies!

Bo Sanchez runs 12 businesses, leads countless organizations, and yet, he has so much time to spend with his family and friends. He also has enough “Me” time to do some planning and writing. I heard he recently took a one week vacation by himself so he could write books. And this blew me away! I once emailed him and he answered me in less than 24 hours! Amazing!
Here’s my wild guess. The secret is outsourcing.  His 12 businesses are on auto-pilot. It means that his businesses could run profitably even if he’s on vacation. His businesses give him passive income. And so he has more time to do things he deems most important… I feel blessed to be mentored by him through his Truly Rich Club.  Someday, I would want to reach a point wherein my “sources of income” are on auto-pilot.
What tasks do you need to outsource so you can have more time for more important things?  I’d love to hear from you. Please share in the comments.
