A Trip to Anawim

On October 10, 2010, my friends Ebb, Will, and I visited Anawim. Anawim is a home-for-the aged based in Montalban, Rizal. It was founded by Bo Sanchez.
We met the jolly Lolos and Lolas of Anawim who were so game to showcase their singing and dancing skills.

Lola Vicky taught me one very important lesson that day which I shared in my first book Think Rich, Yuppies, that is: TO STOP AND SMELL THE FLOWERS.

I promised Lola Vicky and the Lolos and Lolas of Anawim that I will go back and visit them again.

Last April 9, 2015, my friends Trixie, Joselle, Jane, JJ, Rich, and I visited Anawim. It was my second time to go there.

The visit was the product of our seminar-for-a cause called “The Courage Conference” held last January 2015. We used the net proceeds from that seminar to buy stuff for Anawim. We also donated some cash.

I was particularly excited to see Lola Vicky again, along with the Lolos and Lolas of Anawim, of course!

Apparently, I was too late. Lola Vicky already took a flight to heaven two years ago. As I was treading the path where Lola Vicky and I used to walk, I was reminiscing the times when we used to hold hands while walking… She would stop from time to time to pick some flowers, smell them, give them to me. She would also look me in the eye, smile at me, and hug me. Such a sweet Lola.

That momentous day, 09 April 2015, which also happened to be “Araw ng Kagitingan,” the Lolos and Lolas of Anawim taught me a very important lesson:

“YOU ARE NEVER TOO POOR TO NOT BE ABLE TO SHARE ANYTHING.”

We went to Anawim supposedly to give joy to the Lolos and Lolas. But the Lolos and Lolas were the ones who gave us joy that no amount of money could ever buy. They sang and danced with gusto! They were all out in entertaining us.

The most touching part was this: They were singing and dancing and Lolo Willy was playing the piano since 9am! We arrived in Anawim at 3pm.

The Lolos and Lolas were so generous of their time and energy! They gave everything they’ve got — their talents, time, energy, love, smiles. So generous and sweet of them.

On a lighter note, my heart overflows with joy and love and happiness because I’m surrounded by friends who have a big heart for the poor. And this makes me feel sooooo rich!!! Thank God!

Thank you to everyone who participated in our seminar-for-a cause called “The Courage Conference” last Jan 24, 2015. Thank you to our co-speakers Robin Sieger and Atty. Alex Lacson!

Thank you, Tita Chiqui, Deegee, Tita Remy Santos, and Kat for sharing your resources.

What are your gifts? What keeps you from sharing them?

Remember, “You are never too poor to not be able to share anything.”

I wish you success and happiness!
