What Traveling Solo to Bali Taught Me
How are you? Last week, I traveled solo to Bali for 5 days. It was a unique experience for me. Let me share with you the three lessons Bali taught me.
1. You are stronger and braver than you think you are.
I went to Bali, Indonesia by myself. It was my first time to travel solo and I didn’t know anyone there. I didn’t know what to expect. Plus, I wasn’t really comfortable sleeping in an unfamiliar hotel room by myself. This has been my struggle for years now.
So imagine being in Bali for 5 days, all by myself, not knowing anyone there. I was excited but a little scared at the same time.
The good news is, I survived! Hehe! 🙂 I didn’t just survive! I enjoyed the peace and quiet. I enjoyed meeting new people. I enjoyed the place. I enjoyed the feeling of being independent and free. I realized, I was stronger and braver than I thought I was.
I volunteered to take their family picture. I gained new friends.
You may be going through a tough time right now. Maybe you have problems with your finances. Or maybe someone you trusted hurt you and you feel so down. Or maybe someone else got the promotion you wanted. Or maybe someone betrayed you and you can’t seem to move forward. Feel the hurt. Feel the pain. But bounce back. Remember, you are stronger than you think you are. God will give you the grace to move forward. You will rise from this adversity. You are stronger and braver than you think you are.
2. Learn to enjoy your own company.
I enjoyed my stay in Bali but there were a few times when I felt lonely. I joined group tours and I was hoping to meet people and make new friends. But for 2 out of the 3 group tours I joined, I was the only “joiner.” It was just me, the driver, and the tour guide in the car. Haha!
At first, I felt disappointed. But then I realized, “Aha! Maybe this is a test for me. Do I like my own company? Do I enjoy my own company? Can I enjoy whether I’m alone or I’m in the company of my friends or in the company of complete strangers?”
I made a decision to be friendly with our tour guide Putra and our driver Nanga. During the long ride, I also took quick naps while listening to Joel Osteen’s podcast.Â
During stopovers, I would meet people from different countries. Some of them were solo travelers, too. Some of them traveled with their friends or family.
Out of curiosity, I randomly asked two of them,
“Why do you travel solo?’
Girl A said, “Because I have a lot of vacation leaves and I want to use them up. My friends are not available so I chose to travel solo.”
I asked another person, “How about you? Do you like traveling solo as well?”
Girl B said, “Nope, I don’t like my own company. I get bored with myself.”
Which one are you? 🙂
When you travel solo, you will learn how important it is to enjoy your own company and not be dependent on other people to make you happy. Once you learn the art of enjoying your own company, you’ll be happier because your happiness is no longer dependent on who you are with. You can be happy whether you are with yourself, or with a stranger, or with a friend.
3. Trust God and enjoy life.
Being in a foreign place and not knowing anyone helped me deepen my trust in God. I trusted Him to keep me company while I slept in my hotel room by myself. I trusted Him to lead me to the right people. I trusted Him to guide my steps.
On Day 5 of my stay in Bali, I didn’t make any plans. I just wanted to visit a Catholic Church in the morning, then walk by the beach in the afternoon. My flight back to Manila was 11:20 PM, so technically, I still had the entire day to enjoy Bali. When I woke up that day, I said, “God, surprise me today!”
True enough, God surprised me. I got a call from Darwis, an owner of a travel agency in Bali, and asked, “Would you like me to tour you around today?”Â
That day was filled with fun adventures. It was one of the most fun days I’ve had while in Bali.
I realized God loves us not just in big things but in small things as well. Trust Him. He knows what’s best for you.Â
