6 Powerful Ways to Save Money
6 Powerful Ways to Save Money: Practical Tips for Filipinos to Achieve Financial Freedom

Today, let’s talk about simple yet powerful ways to save money.
I know that when it comes to saving money, it can often feel like there’s never enough left over at the end of the month.
What if I told you that making just a few small changes to your daily habits could make a big difference in your finances?
Here are some practical tips you can start using today. We’ll also explore sample computations so you can see how much you can potentially save.
- Bring Your Water Bottle.
This might seem like a small thing, but it adds up! Instead of buying bottled water every time you’re out, carry your reusable bottle. Not only will you help save the environment, but you’ll also keep more money in your pocket. Imagine how much you can save over a year!
I bring my water bottle everywhere I go — even when I was in the U.S., Europe, and other countries. I can’t remember the last time I bought bottled water because I got thirsty.
Let’s do a simple computation. Let’s say you buy two bottled water worth Php25 each week.
Php50 x 52 weeks = Php2,600
Potential Savings in a year: Php2,600
- Skip buying drinks.
It’s tempting to order sodas, juices, coffee, or even a glass of wine. But these drinks can quickly inflate your bill. Opt for water instead—it’s free, and it’s healthier for you. Over time, those savings will start to add up!
Let’s say you buy Starbucks or smoothie or milk tea each week which costs you around Php150.
Php150 x 52 weeks = Php7,800
Potential Savings in a year: Php7,800
- Declutter and Sell.
Take a look at your home and closet—are there furniture clothes or items you no longer use? Why not organize a garage sale or sell them online? Not only will you free up space, but you’ll also earn a little extra cash. Plus, decluttering your space can bring a surprising amount of mental clarity and peace.
Let’s say you tried this experiment and you were able to sell items and make Php10,000, that’s Php10,000 savings for you!
Potential Savings in a year: Php10,000
- Cook your meals instead of eating out or ordering takeout.
Eating out or ordering takeout might be convenient, but it can quickly drain your wallet. Try planning your meals for the week and cooking at home more often. Not only is it usually healthier, but you’ll also save a significant amount of money.
Let’s say you eat out or do take out twice a day — lunch and dinner — and you spend Php300 per meal.
Php300 x 2 x 30 = Php18,000 on food per month
What if you cook your food and do the grocery? Let’s say you spend Php8k on grocery/wet market, that would save you Php10k per month.
Potential Savings in a year: Php10k x 12 = Php120k
Let’s compute how much you can potentially save in a year using the 4 tips above:
Total Potential Savings in a year: Php140,400
If you invest Php140,400 in an investment instrument that gives you 5% return annually, that’s equivalent to:
>> Php228,773 in 10 years
>> Php372,539 in 20 years
If you invest Php140,400 in an investment instrument that gives you 10% return annually, that’s equivalent to:
>>Php364,157 in 10 years
>>Php944,690 in 20 years… That’s almost a million pesos!
It does add up!
Amazing what little tweaks in our finances can do, right?!
That’s the power of compounding!
That’s the power of financial literacy!
Which leads me to my 5th and 6th tips.
- Track Your Income and Expenses.
Buy a nice notebook and each month, track your expenses and income. When you know where your money is going, you’re less likely to overspend and more likely to find areas where you can save.
- Invest in Financial Literacy.
This is perhaps the most crucial tip of all. Read books on money management, attend seminars, and join trustworthy online courses or membership clubs. This is the best way to empower yourself in money management.
Don’t skimp on financial education because financial illiteracy is very, very expensive!
It can shatter your finances and cost you your lifetime savings.
On the other hand, financial education will empower you to manage and grow your money so that over time, you can be free from financial worries.
In my next email on Friday, I’m going to share with you how financial illiteracy can drain you and what you can do instead.
Spoiler Alert: I’ll share some of my money bloopers that cost me sleep, savings, and peace of mind —so you won’t repeat my mistakes.
I hope this post empowered you.
Every little step counts! You got this!
Just be a little more patient with yourself.
I wish you success and happiness,
Sha
