While Waiting…

When I learned that I will have my annual physical exam (APE), the first thing that came to mind was, “Whew! I finished another fantastic year with my employer. Time flies!”

The next thought didn’t excite me,  “Uh oh! I will have to endure the long lines and long waiting time again…”

Waiting can be quite taxing, especially when your mind is preoccupied with other more important things to do.

I’m sure you’ve experienced “idle times” when you were stuck in traffic or while waiting for your turn in the dental clinic or while you were waiting for your order in a restaurant, etc.

So what do you do in times like these? Here are a few suggestions:

1. Read a book.

Instead of staring at the floor or at your seatmate, take out that book that you’ve been wanting to read.

How to Prosper by Bo Sanchez

Last Friday when I had my APE, I took out Bo Sanchez‘ book How to Prosper. It was a short book and I’ve already read it but there’s something about how Bo writes that makes me want to read his books over and over again.

In between my vital signs and laboratory tests which lasted for two hours, I was able to finish reading his book.  I guess that was pretty productive!

2. Think and plan.

This is a good time to think about your goals and plan how to achieve them.

Sometimes good ideas pop out when you least expect them. It’s good to always have a pen and notebook ready so you could write down those “eureka moments.”

This blog post is a “eureka” while waiting for my turn outside the doctor’s clinic.

3. Pray.

In Kerygma magazine’s June 2012 issue, Bo Sanchez said,

As long as you live near the Blesser, you’ll bear fruit. Your blessings will come. Your work will prosper. Your success will be at hand.

Whenever we pray, we reunite ourselves with Him who is the ultimate source of all the good things we aspire for — health, happiness, wealth, relationships — name it.

I always bring with me a pocket rosary. When my eyes get tired of reading or my head hurts from too much thinking, I take out my pocket rosary and start praying.

I would pray for my family and friends, my future husband, my dreams, the readers of my books and blogs (yes, you! :), my seatmate, the security guard who might be tired from standing all day, that cute little baby across the room, and practically everyone I would see or everyone that would cross my mind at that moment.

Yes, I get distracted but it’s still better than looking at my watch and counting imaginary sheep.

4. Listen to an audio book.

There’s a wealth of information that could be learned from great audio books.

Instead of loading your i-Pod or gadgets with just songs, you may also want to save some good talks or audio books that you could listen to as and when the occasion arises.

I love listening to Bo Sanchez’ audio talks which I downloaded from his Truly Rich Club. There was a time when I would listen to one or two of his talks every single morning while I eat my breakfast and prepare for work!

Perhaps I’ve already listened to all of his talks at least five times! I would like to believe that after listening to his talks over and over again, I became happier and more positive. Try it.

5. Converse with your seatmate or play with his/her child.

While waiting for a seminar to start, you may want to smile at your seatmate and start a conversation. Who knows? You’ll gain a friend or two.

It was one of those colloquial conversations when I met some good friends. In fact, one of these friends I met in a seminar became my kumpare because he and his wife asked me to be a ninang to their son.

So there… I hope you find these simple tips useful. The next time you

– apply for your driver’s license or NBI clearance

– visit your dentist

–  wait for your flight

– visit a government office

or you are caught in any situation where you have to wait for hours, you don’t have to feel frustrated waiting because there are a lot of exciting and productive things that you could do.

Speaking of Bo Sanchez‘ book How to Prosper,  I was struck by what he said:

Increase your income by increasing your service.

He mentioned that there are three ways to increase your service:

1. Increase the scale. How many customers do you serve?

2. Increase the satisfaction. How many customers are happy with your service?

3. Increase the spirit of your service. How many customers have become your friends?

What he said were worth  pondering. And this is applicable to any of us — whether you’re an employee or a student or an entrepreneur.

I began to think about my books and blogs. And this I would like to ask you, my dear readers.

Are you happy with the articles I post here in Seminar Philippines?
