Lessons from Miss Universe 2016
Today was a momentous day not just for the Philippines but for the entire universe.
.
.
I remember when I was still studying in U.P. Diliman. In the boarding house where I lived, my housemates and I loved to watch the Miss Universe pageant until late night.
.
.
When I graduated from college, I couldn’t remember if I had the chance to sit down and watch the Miss Universe Coronation Night.
.
.
Today, I was down with fever. It’s a blessing in disguise because I felt as if God was telling me, “Come on, Sha. Just relax today. Let me entertain you.”
.
.
Thank God for Facebook LIVE Streaming. I got to watch it even if we don’t have a TV set at home.
.
.
My respect and high regard go to all the contestants. And wow! Our Miss Philippines Maxine Medina made it to the top 6! What an achievement for us.
.
.
As I was browsing Facebook, I was happy to see positive comments from people congratulating Maxine.
.
.
But I also noticed that about 50% of those who posted Miss Universe updates were bashing Maxine Medina as regards her answer during the Q&A portion.
.
.

.
.
I saw comments and status like,
.
.
Sana nagTagalog nalang sya…
.
.
Ano daw???
.
.
Walang kwenta ang sagot kahit Tagalugin pa.
.
.
Ouch! I don’t know Maxine personally but I felt for her. I know we are all entitled to our opinions…but…I hope as a nation, we can be a little more encouraging and kind to each other.
.
.
I am writing this not to bash the bashers, but to thank Maxine Medina for representing the Philippines and to let her know I am proud of her and that she did a great job!
.
.
I am also writing this because I believe in our countrymen. Filipinos are naturally warm and kind.
. .
.
I’d like to share the three lessons I learned from the Miss Universe pageant.
.
.
Lesson #1: Before You Judge, Imagine Yourself as Miss Universe
.
.
Imagine yourself in Maxine’s situation. You’re in front of thousands of people, plus millions of people watching you LIVE all over the world. You’re only given 30 seconds, my gosh! 30 seconds!!!… to express your insights. You’re under so much pressure.
.
.
Imagine also that you’ve been training so hard to walk, talk, move, dress up, and act like a Miss Universe. You put in a lot of hard work and long hours, not just today, but for the past few days and months, for this pageant.
.
.
Imagine holding the pageant at 7am! Woah! What time did these contestants wake up to have their hair and make-up done? Did they even sleep at all prior to the pageant? I’m not sure.
.
.
I am an active member of Toastmasters International, a public speaking organisation. As a Toastmaster, I know how it feels to join an Impromptu Speaking Competition. It can be quite challenging.
. .
.
So let’s be slow to judge. Before we voice out our opinions, let’s put ourself in the shoes of Maxine.
.
.
We, too, can mess up with our answers. We, too, can make mistakes.
.
.
How would we feel if, after all the hard work and long hours we put into representing our country, our countrymen will focus on what we did wrong? Sakit di ba? As my brother jokingly said, “Masakit, mga Bes.”
.
.
Lesson 2: Focus on the Good
.
.
Out of the 86 Miss Universe Contestants all over the universe, Maxine made it to the top 6! Wow!
.
.
Before she made it to the 86, she had to compete in the country level. That’s really a job well done for Maxine!
.
.
Maxine represented our country. She made us proud.
.
.
Let’s focus on that. Let’s focus on the good.
.
.
Lesson 3: Look at the Story Behind the Story
.
.
As I was looking at all these contestants in their evening gown, I could only imagine the discipline, focus, and hard work they put in to maintain their beautiful figure.
.
.
While it is so easy to indulge in sweets and our favorite food, I’m thinking… How about these contestants? Did they follow a strict diet to maintain their figure?
.
.
While it is so difficult to hit the gym or exercise on a regular basis, did these contestants visit the gym regulary?
.
.
The discipline to exercise and eat the right food. Wow!
And even for that alone, they deserve our applause.
.
.
As an author, a speaker, and an entrepreneur, I am learning a lot from Maxine and all the Miss Universe contestants as regards discipline, hard work, and focus. We’re learning from them, di ba? 🙂
.
.
.
.
Aren’t you proud of Maxine and all the contestants? Please share your love in the comments.
.
.
Maxine Medina, you’ve done a great job! You made it to the top 6. You gave your best. You represented our country, the Philippines. Congratulations! Hugs! God bless you! 🙂
.
.
God bless all the Miss Universe contestants and everyone behind it.
I wish you success and happiness!
